Current Research Activities

• Disease resistance in pulse crops.
  Germplasm of agricultural crop species relevant to Canada, and their wild relatives, are being acquired from around the world particularly from international gene banks, research scientists, and plant breeders, and occasionally during collection trips in other countries. Accessions of selected crop species are being evaluated for resistance to plant pathogens important to the Canadian agricultural sector. Currently, accessions of lentil (Lens culinaris) are screened for resistance to anthracnose (Colletotrichum truncatum) and ascochyta blight (Ascochyta lentis), and accessions of chickpea (Circer ann) for resistance to ascochyta blight (Ascochyta rabiei). The number of resistance genes (their dominance and additivity) is being determined in the most resistant accessions for utilisation in plant breeding programs that will address serious production problems caused by the pathogens. In collaboration with other research scientists, molecular markers linked to disease resistance genes have been developed and linkage maps were updated.
  
  
• Resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in various crop species.
  Elucidation of resistance to sclerotinia white mould in Brassica napus (canola) is underway in a collaborative effort between staff at PGRC and the Molecular Genetics Section at the Saskatoon Research Centre which is partially funded by private and public canola breeding companies. The work is based on a B. napus cultivar with high level of resistance to sclerotinia stem rot identified in China. Genetic studies of inheritance and development of microsatellite markers linked to QTLs conferring sclerotinia resistance are in progress. Accessions of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and wild sunflower (Helianthus sp.) are being evaluated for resistance to S. sclerotiorum in field nurseries.
  
  
• Research before 2001.
  Previous studies included integrated control of foliar diseases in pulse crops, lentil, chickpea and pea, using partial resistance to foliar pathogens combined with application of either contact or systemic fungicides at different rates and growth stages. A fungicide decisions support system was developed and tested in lentil for control of anthracnose and ascochyta blight in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
